Eyebobs Benefiting Glide Memorial

Eyebobs have released a Chris Gardner designed set of reading glass frames, with proceeds benefiting Glide Memorial.

      <dc:subject></dc:subject>

I’m proud to announce my first small foray into the world of fashion design, in collaboration with the folks at Eyebobs. We’ve created a reading glass frame that’s a variation of their “Thick Eye” design featuring blue and brown tortoise shell front with deep blue stems. I call them “All Blues”. They’ll be shipping in July, but are available for pre-order now at Eyebobs.

The June 14 issue of Jet magazine has a brief “designer spotlight” that features my thoughts on the Eyebobs design, which are a response to the difficulty in finding fashionable reading glasses for men. Our press page has a link to the article.

Truly the best thing about these glasses is that the proceeds go to Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco. Those of you who’ve seen The Pursuit of Happyness may know Glide as the homeless shelter and soup kitchen that assisted my son and me during our period of homelessness in the early 1980s. Glide today continues the work helping the community that the church and its pastor Rev. Cecil Williams have been committed to for nearly 50 years. If you’re not interested in the eyeglasses but would like to help Glide, you can contribute at the Glide website.

A sample of artwork created in response to my speech at TechTown in Detroit.

      <dc:subject></dc:subject>

I recently spoke in Detroit on behalf of TechTown, a business incubator project associated with Wayne State University that’s working to create a next generation entrepreneurial environment in Detroit.

While speaking there, the folks at TechTown had a number of artists stand behind me and sketch their impressions of what I was saying on a whiteboard as I spoke. Recently they sent me photos of the artwork that was created, and I was very impressed with the work the artists spontaneously created to illustrate my speech.

I’d like to share all this artwork with you, and have instructed my staff to obtain clearance with TechTown and obtain the names of all the artists so they can be properly credited. In the meantime, here’s a little sample:

Thanks to the National Association of Realtors for inviting me to speak at their 2009 Leadership Summit on 8/25/2009.

      <dc:subject></dc:subject>

Thanks to the National Association of Realtors for inviting me to speak at their 2009 Leadership Summit on Tuesday. Realtor Magazine has posted a blog entry about my keynote speech. Among the issues I discussed was white-collar homelessness, a phenomenon that is undoubtedly increasing as a result of the current economic downturn. Those in the real estate industry see the imbalances in our economy on a day-to-day basis: as realtors struggle to liquidate excess housing stocks at depressed prices, homelessness increases while perfectly habitable homes sit empty and foreclosed properties fall into disrepair and drag down property values in their communities. I don’t claim to know the solution, but I know one thing: the current situation reflects the fact that markets had gotten out of sync with real human needs, which are the reason market economies exist at all. Market forces will inevitably work things out with time, but there will continue to be a lot of pain in the interim. Hopefully folks will remember to keep their heads screwed on straight during the next speculative bubble, but unfortunately history suggests that most economic lessons learned in downturns are rapidly forgotten when things start humming again.

Please stop spamming our blog comments section. You’re wasting your time.

      <dc:subject></dc:subject>

A note to all of you who’ve been auto-spamming pr0n links and other bogus ads to our comments section: Please, GET A LIFE. As in, a real life where you actually make money doing things that are at least marginally useful to your fellow human beings. I hate to sound like a Kindergarten teacher (although that’s a noble and useful profession, unlike the bottom-feeders who’ve been posting spam here), but you are the kind of folks who ruin things for everyone. Seriously.

Anyway, we have left our comments section open and have not required site registration so far, to keep an open dialog going and to provide the least friction for folks to express their thoughts. We might have to rethink that in the future, but for now my staff will manually delete bogus spam comments, probably long before anyone clicks on them or Google indexes them. So you’re wasting your time! Move along, there’s nothing to see here …

And to all the folks who’ve posted legitimate comments, I really appreciate your interest, and the decent and respectful tone you’ve maintained. I see that folks have posted a lot of questions, and I’ll try to answer those I can as time permits. Thanks once again for visiting the site and leaving your thoughtful comments.
